Internship Description
Google Data Center Engineering team takes the physical design of our data centres into the future, and our Technical, Engineering, and Support teams bring ideas to life.
- The teams use creative approaches to reduce operational costs and to extend traditional practices to meet our goal of making our data centres the most energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable in the world.
- The Hardware Operations team is the team in the Data Center responsible for monitoring, maintaining and deploying the state-of-the-art physical infrastructure behind Google’s powerful search technology.
- Operations Engineers deploy and maintain Google’s advanced Data Center Server and Network Infrastructure.
- Their duties range from the physical deployment of data centre-related technology to working closely with the various stakeholders.
- This team offers a great introduction to the wider engineering world at Google.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to repairs, upgrades, deployments, and cabling.
- Identify trends for machine failure, report bugs and work with remote teams to resolve them.
- Communicate effectively with clients and partners.
- Contribute to projects in deployment and maintenance, and provide support of current and new data centre infrastructure.
- Configure and troubleshoot Linux OS-related challenges on our servers, and resolve critical or escalated technical challenges over a significant population of affected equipment.
Application Process
Google Winter internships will start in February 2024 and will be 22-24 weeks in duration.
This internship is intended for students who are pursuing the final year in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Dual degree program in Computer Science or a related field and will graduate in 2024.

Qualification
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- Experience with installing a Network or Linux system.
- Ability to communicate in English fluently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with the basic concepts of Network and Linux systems.
- Ability to understand and develop data centre architectures, products, system design, operations, maintenance, and procedures.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to use tools to produce highly accurate analyses that ensure designs satisfy safety requirements.
- Available to work full time for a minimum of 6 months outside of university term time.
