SURGE Internship Program 2025 at IIT Kanpur [May 13-July 11]: Submit by Feb 15

Submissions are invited for the SURGE Internship Program 2025 at IIT Kanpur. The submission deadline is February 15, 2025!

About SURGE

Students-Undergraduate Research Graduate Excellence (SURGE) program is an internship Program of IIT Kanpur, which runs under the aegis of Office of Outreach Activities (OOA), IIT Kanpur. SURGE program was launched and inaugurated on 8 May 2006 by Professor Sanjay G. Dhande, the then Director, IIT Kanpur. Since inception, the SURGE program has grown, providing more and more research opportunities to young scholars than the year before. The duration of the SURGE program is approximately 8 weeks which is tentatively scheduled to be held from 13^th May, 2025 till 11^th July, 2025.

Eligibility

SURGE for SAARC Countries

• The SURGE program is open to UG students from SAARC countries (Nepal & Bhutan).
• A maximum of 4 students from SAARC countries are allowed to participate in the SURGE program for the summer of 2025.
• Selected students are eligible for:
  • A scholarship of Rs. 16,000/-.
  • Travel expenses reimbursement up to Rs. 10,000/- (or as per actual).
• Eligibility criteria at the time of internship start:
  • B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed).
  • Five-year degree program (3rd or 4th year completed).
  • B.Sc/B.A. (2nd year completed).
  • M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year completed).
• Interested students with CPI >= 6 need to complete the online registration form.
• Documents required before filling the online application:
  1. Recent passport-size photograph in .jpg format (not more than 1MB).
  2. A single file in .pdf format (not more than 3MB) containing:
     • Research Proposal (not more than 500 words).
     • Current Transcript.
  3. A single file in .pdf format (not more than 1MB) containing Recommendation Letter I from a faculty member of the applicant’s institute.
  4. A single file in .pdf format (not more than 1MB) containing Recommendation Letter II from a faculty member of the applicant’s institute.

SURGE for Non-IITK Indian Students

• Non-IITK Indian students with CPI >= 6 are eligible to apply for a summer internship at IIT Kanpur.
• Eligibility criteria at the time of internship start:
  • B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed).
  • Five-year degree program (3rd or 4th year completed).
  • B.Sc/B.A. (2nd year completed).
  • M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year completed).
• Interested students need to complete the online registration form.
• Documents required before filling the online application:
  1. Recent passport-size photograph in .jpg format (not more than 1MB).
  2. A single file in .pdf format (not more than 3MB) containing:
     • Research Proposal (not more than 500 words).
     • Current Transcript.
  3. A single file in .pdf format (not more than 1MB) containing Recommendation Letter I from a faculty member of the applicant’s institute.
  4. A single file in .pdf format (not more than 1MB) containing Recommendation Letter II from a faculty member of the applicant’s institute.
• Note:
  • There is no fixed format for the recommendation letter under this category.
  • The recommendation letter should be on the applicant’s institute letterhead or the respective faculty member’s letterhead, duly signed.
  • The SURGE Office will directly contact the recommenders for verification of recommendation letters.

SURGE for IIT Kanpur (IITK) Students

• IITK students with CPI >= 5.5 are given an opportunity to work with a chosen mentor at IITK.
• Students must identify an IITK Faculty mentor and a suitable project for the 8-week summer internship.
• Eligibility criteria at the time of internship start:
  • B.Tech/BS (2nd or 3rd year completed).
  • Dual Degree (2nd, 3rd, or 4th year completed).
  • M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year completed).
• Interested students need to complete the online registration form.
• Documents required before filling the online application:
  1. Recent passport-size photograph in .jpg format (not more than 1MB).
  2. A single file in .pdf format (not more than 3MB) containing:
     • Research Proposal (not more than 500 words).
     • Current Transcript.
     • One signed letter of Mentor Certification from Professor (as per the format provided).
• Note:
  • Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is not required for IITK participants.
  • However, the names of two potential referees (IITK Faculty) must be mentioned in the application form for verification.
  • IITK participants cannot undertake a SUMMER COURSE and SURGE-2025 PROJECT simultaneously, except for those with CPI >= 8.5, who are allowed to take one SUMMER COURSE along with SURGE-2025 PROJECT.

Financial Support

• Institute Funded Category:
  • Students selected under this category may receive a stipend of Rs 16,000/- during the program duration.
  • Candidates with CPI >= 8.5 (at the time of registration) will be eligible for consideration of Institute Funding.
  • Only 60 participants are eligible to avail this funding.
  • The selection of participants for funding under this category will be done at the time of declaration of SURGE-2025 results.
• Partial Institute Funded Category (up to 50% of Institute Funded Category):
  • Students selected under this category may receive a stipend of up to Rs 8,000/- during the program duration.
  • Candidates with CPI >= 8.5 (at the time of registration) will be eligible for consideration of Institute Funding.
  • Only 60 participants are eligible to avail this funding.
  • The selection of participants for funding under this category will be done at the time of declaration of SURGE-2025 results.
• Funding from IITK Project (Project Funded Category)
  • Students selected under this category may receive funding directly from the faculty members (mentors) of IIT Kanpur.
• Self Funded
  • Students selected under this category will have an opportunity to work on projects of faculty members of IIT Kanpur, however, they will not be entitled to any funding.
• Funding for SAARC Participants
  • The students selected under this category are eligible for a scholarship of Rs. 16,000/-.
  • Additionally, travel expenses (up to Rs. 10,000/- (maximum) or as per actual) are also reimbursed.
• Industry-IITK Tie-up (if any)
  • Students selected under this category will have an opportunity to work as individuals or in teams on real-world projects proposed by the industry.
  • Mentors from both IIT Kanpur and the industry will guide the students.
  • The stipend will be paid by the industry.
  • In SURGE-2025, only IIT Kanpur students can participate under this category.

How to Submit?

Eligible candidates are required to register ONLINE through the website LINK

• Online Registration is available from January 30, 2025 (3 PM onwards) to February 15, 2025 (Midnight) for all the categories of students applying for the internship.
  NOTE: Incomplete applications will not be entertained in any case.

PHASE-I:

• Step-1: Register for SURGE 2025
  • Register through the online portal LINK: LINK (Link will be available from 3 PM onwards).
  • There are three categories:
    • IITK: Only IITK Students can apply.
    • NON-IITK: Only Indian students from various Indian Institutions can apply.
    • SAARC: Only students of SAARC countries (Nepal, Bhutan) can apply.
  • Complete the registration form in all respects.
  • An email indicating successful completion of registration of your online application will be sent to your registered email address containing login credentials.
• Step 2: Payment of Registration Fee (Non-refundable) of Rs 750/- (only for NON-IITK students)
  • Before proceeding with the payment, please go through the payment procedure LINK.
  • Click on the State Bank Collect link to pay the Registration Fee.
  • After completion of payment, note down the Transaction ID and save the payment receipt in .pdf format for future reference.

PHASE-II: Complete the Online Registration Form

• Go through this link: LINK, log in with the credentials received in your registered email, and complete the online registration form in all respects.
• In Section-4 on your registration portal:
  • Enter the Transaction ID.
  • Upload the payment receipt in .pdf format (for Non-IITK students only).
• Step by step, complete all 4 Sections on your registration portal, including uploading relevant documents.
• After final submission, you will receive an email confirmation on your registered email ID indicating the successful completion of the online registration form along with the generated Application Number.
• Please quote the Application Number in all future correspondence.
• Registration will be considered complete only after receiving the Registration Fee at our end.

Important Notes:

• Incomplete/Incorrect applications will not be entertained and will be summarily rejected.
• Any attempt to influence the process will outrightly lead to disqualification of candidature.
• If the mentor/recommender wants to maintain the confidentiality of the mentor/recommendation certificate, they can directly mail the .pdf file of the concerned certificate mentioning the Application Number of the participant to surge@iitk.ac.in.
• In such cases, participants are requested to upload a blank PDF mentioning their recommender’s details.

Awards

• Dr. Elizabeth and Dr. Verkey Cherian Award:
  • For producing exceptional quality research for overall Best Project, which carries a cash award of Rs. 5,000/- plus a commendation certificate.
  • For producing exceptionally Outstanding Poster, which carries a cash award of Rs. 5,000/- plus a commendation certificate.
• Best Project Award for Engineering: For producing exceptional quality research in Engineering, which carries a cash award of Rs. 10,000/- plus a commendation certificate.
• Best Project Award for Sciences: For producing exceptional quality research in Sciences, which carries a cash award of Rs. 10,000/- plus a commendation certificate.
• The awardees for the above awards are selected based on the evaluation of their overall performance, by a team of evaluators comprising eminent faculty members from various departments of IIT Kanpur.

Registration and Administrative Charges

NOTE: During the entire stay of internship at IIT Kanpur campus, boarding and lodging expenses will be borne by the concerned participants on actual basis. SURGE internship is offered in offline mode, request for online mode will not be entertained.
