About American Express Makeathon

After the stupendous success of our last three Makeathons, American Express is back with the 2023 edition in a brand new avatar! Now is the time for women in tech to rise up and create something groundbreaking with Makeathon 2023. This team-based competition follows the standard hackathon format with an idea submission phase (Round 1) and a Hackathon/ prototype building (Round 2). Teams will have the opportunity to choose 1 out of 7 exciting themes centered on the ever-dynamic Fintech universe. To add to the experience and learning quotient, each team that makes it to the prototype phase will be coached by a mentor from American Express leading into the finale. The opportunity to grow, learn, and become a better engineer just doubled up.

Themes

  • Facial Recognition for transactions or OTP

Develop a system that balances the need for security with the user’s convenience and privacy while ensuring the technology’s accuracy and reliability.

  • Rewards gamification for credit or debit card transactions

Develop a gamification strategic application that can help credit and debit card users take advantage of Rewards programs.

  • Blockchain-based mandates

Develop blockchain-based solutions that can ensure compliance with regulatory mandates while also providing transparency, security, and efficiency.

  • ML-based fraud detection

Develop and maintain ML-based fraud detection models that are effective at identifying evolving fraud patterns even in the presence of imbalanced data.

  • Open innovation for managing the risk profile

Building a unique solution for managing risk profiles involves the development and implementation of data-driven risk management strategies.

  • Digital Wallet

Build a basic digital wallet to transact using e-RUPI.

  • Quantum-safe crypto-algorithm

Build a quantum-safe crypto-algorithm for future-proofing Amex’s sensitive data.

Process Flow

Hackathons will contain two major phases, as described:

  • Idea Submission Phase (Online Mode)

The microsite for American Express Makeathon 2023 will be listed on HackerEarth’s Challenges portal and will be open for registrations. Registrants will form teams on the platform and share ideas/concepts to the proposed real use case problem statement. The team formation and submission happen on the platform itself.  The submissions will then be evaluated by the HackerEarth team and shortlisted teams will be asked to give the presentation during the Finale.

  • Tech Fest (Finale – Online Mode)

Shortlisted participants from the idea submission phase will work on prototype solutions/source codes/video presentations to the proposed problem statement with mentoring from the American Express team. These shortlisted teams will then present their final prototypes on a 1-day finale. American Express will evaluate its presentations to announce the winners of the hackathon.

Eligibility

Women students currently pursuing any technical degree from a recognized engineering college in India.

Submissions

As part of the hackathon, participants are required to submit their material on the platform made available for this purpose. Submissions may include ideas, prototypes, and applications. All submissions that the participants make must be original and unique. All submissions must be made on or before the deadline and must meet all the guidelines defined for this purpose. Since the hackathon is being conducted in multiple phases, the relevant submissions must be made on or before the end of each phase in the format defined on the hackathon website.
