Open Data Hack powered by Filecoin is a riveting three-week online hackathon starting August 30th. The Hackathon is organized by encode club. Checkout more details below!

About Encode Club

Encode Club is a Web3 education community learning and building together through fantastic programmes with the leading protocols in the space. They organize programmes like education series, bootcamps, hackathons, and accelerators both online and in person. They then help the community get jobs and funding for projects and startups.

Encode club was founded in 2019 by a group of entrepreneurs and technologists who believe that decentralized technologies have the potential to change the world. They believe that by providing education and support to developers, we can help to build a more decentralized and equitable future.

About Filecoin

Filecoin is a decentralized storage network that uses blockchain technology to create a market for unused storage capacity. Filecoin provides a way for users to rent storage from other users, and for storage providers to earn money by storing data. Filecoin is built on top of IPFS, a peer-to-peer distributed file system that uses content addressing to allow permanent references to data, and avoids relying on specific devices or cloud servers for addressing the content. Filecoin is different from IPFS because it has an incentive layer on top to incentivize contents to be reliably stored and accessed. The Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM) is a runtime environment for smart contracts (also called actors) on the Filecoin network. FVM brings user programmability to Filecoin, unleashing the enormous potential of an open data economy.

About the Hackathon

The hackathon starts on August 30th with an online launch event. Followed by a meeting with the Filecoin and Encode teams, as well as the hackathon partners, who will tell you about the bounties you can tackle. The launch event will be followed by a series of workshops hosted by hackathon partners, aiming to help you build and ship a hackathon project. The different categories of the hackathon are:

  • Data DAOs or Collectives
Best solution to enable DAOs or collectives to form around the creation, curation, monetization and preservation of collectively created datasets that they (and the world) care about, such as video, social network or scientific archives.
  • Add & retrieve data via FVM
Best solutions/products to supercharge data onboarding and retrieval highways onto FVM. Including UI for data upload, replication, repair and renewal workers, and perpetual storage solutions, as well as incentive design to guarantee reliable retrievability to the clients’ data (such as retriev).
  • Data Derivatives
Best product to elevate or harvest the value of public open datasets stored on Filecoin via slingshot, moon-landing, etc. Using FVM to guard the retrieval, usage and profit generated by those open datasets on Filecoin
  • Wild Card
Some ideas don’t fit any categories! The Wild Card prize is for out-of-the-box ideas built on FVM that contribute to building the new Open Data Economy using Filecoin.
