About
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was established in 1951 at Hijli beside Kharagpur, as the first of the IITs. The institute has been awarded the status of “Institute of Eminence” by the Govt. of India. There are at present 54 academic units, including departments, centers, schools and research units that caters to the specific requirements of the country and which are fully equipped with modern laboratories and classrooms. Apart from the academic departments in all streams of engineering, sciences and humanities, many unique centers and schools such as Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Safety Engineering and Analytics , School of Nano-Science and Technology, School of Medical Science and Technology are set up to administer concentrated effort in research, outreach and consultancy in these contemporary areas.
