About DESY Summer Student Programme 2025
The 2025 DESY-Ukraine School will be fully integrated into the DESY Summer Student program, offering students from Ukrainian universities the chance to gain hands-on research experience at the prestigious DESY laboratory.
What sets the DESY Ukraine School apart from the general DESY Summer Student program are two key differences:
- A reserved allocation of spots within the DESY Summer Student program specifically for students enrolled at Ukrainian universities.
- An extended application deadline of 15th February (compared to the usual 31st January deadline).
- Applicants should note that there is no special section to be filled out in the online application form. Instead, the selection will be based on the university they are currently attending.
Programme Details
Each summer DESY offers undergraduate students in physics or related disciplines (such as scientific computing and engineering) the opportunity to obtain first-hand research experience at a large international laboratory. Students are invited for an 8 week training period to experience research in one of the various fields pursued at DESY:
- Photon science
- Elementary particle physics & accelerators
- Astroparticle physics
Selected candidates will join in the day-to-day work of research groups at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg or Zeuthen (close to Berlin). Research projects can be categorised into different types of activities: practical work on detectors or experimental equipment, physics data analysis, software development, theory and scientific computing. The students will gain first-hand experience in independent research, collaborating with established scientists who are experts in their fields. While the research project will be the focus point, there will also be a series of lectures (given in English) tailored towards the key topics of DESY research.
Visits to the accelerators, experiments and computer centre are also part of the agenda.
- Summer students are expected to work 39 hours per week (including project work and lectures).
- They will get DESY Hostel accommodation provided free-of-cost during the full programme period.
- The students will receive adequate financial support to cover living expenses and travel costs.

Eligibility
Applicants should have completed at least three years of full-time studies at university level in physics, related natural science disciplines or computing by the summer of 2025. Please be aware that the large majority of projects we offer are for physics students!
The main target audiences are students who are at the following two stages by summer 2025:
- They are about to obtain their Bachelor’s degree.
- They hold a Bachelor’s degree and are enrolled in a Master’s programme.
- Applicants who already obtained a Master’s degree or will have obtained it by summer 2025 cannot be accepted.
- Applicants should not have previously been at DESY as a summer student.
- Please take note that due to regulations for paid internships in Germany, we can only accept students who are enrolled at their university for the whole period of the Summer Student Programme.
- Unfortunately, we cannot make exceptions to this rule since this is a necessary criteria due to German employment law.
DESY has suspended all participation of Russian and Belarusian institutes in its scientific projects. Consequently, no applications from students enrolled at Russian or Belarussian universities are accepted regardless of their citizenship.
Please take note that all applicants should have a good working knowledge of English and some basic computing skills. The students are expected to participate during the full period of the 2025 programme, from July 22 until September 11.
Certificate: At the end of the programme, we will issue the successful participants a certificate stating that thework is equivalent to 10 ECTS points.
Application Guidelines
- Before applying, please read the conditions carefully and make sure that you meet the qualifications. Please proceed to the application only, if you accept the conditions. This includes that you will participate in the programme for the full period of time.
- Please look through the activities and identify your preferred areas. You can choose three areas in order of priority later in your application form.
- Documents to be uploaded: In the course of this application you will have to upload a single document (only PDF format is accepted), containing:
- a CV (curriculum vitae), the CV should be in tabular form only and contain personal data, educational history / relevant work experience, computing and other relevant work skills (usually 1-2 pages are sufficient for the complete CV).
- University grade certificates (e.g. bachelor certificate, credit points, etc.).
- Applicants from NON-EU and NON-EEA countries need a work permit for Germany. This is German law and mandatory for attending the DESY Summer Student Progamme. Please upload a separate second document (in one .pdf file) containing:
- A copy of your international passport.
- A certificate of enrollment provided by your university. It has to cover the whole period of the programme, i.e. 22 July to 11 September 2025.
- In addition, the Central Working Agency in Bonn requires the so called “Declaration of Certificate of Enrollment” which is also mandatory and has to be signed and stamped by your university, covering the same period (22 July to 11 September 2025).

- The uploading of the documents is to be done on the second page of the online application form. If any of the requested documents is missing, your application will not be considered.
- Two reference letters: Please note that you need to ask your two referees for their permission before giving their names and email addresses in this online form. The referees will get an automatic email notification with instructions where to upload their reference letters.
- At the end of the online application procedure, you will be asked to confirm the correctness of the data you entered. Your data will be electronically saved for six months and processed for the purposes of this summer students application procedure only.
- The selection process will take place after the end of the online application phase and all applicants will be notified by the end of March on the outcome. We or our project supervisors might contact you during February or March via email in case there are further questions regarding your interest and suitability for specific projects.
