About RASS

RASS is a recurring summer school and internship program hosted at the Raman Research Institute, one of India’s leading research institutions. This fully funded program spans two weeks of workshops, complemented by an eight-week research internship, specifically designed for undergraduate students. The initiative aims to engage talented and motivated undergraduate and master’s students in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics.

RRI Astronomy Summer School 2025

The program consists of two key components: a series of introductory lectures by field experts, providing participants with a strong foundation in the fundamental concepts of astronomy and astrophysics, and a hands-on research project, offering students the opportunity to gain practical experience in astronomy-related research.

Eligibility Criteria

Students who have completed (or will complete) at least 2 years (4 semesters) of their bachelor’s program (BTech/BE/BS/BSc) by May 2025, and have not yet started their MS/MSc/Mtech thesis work. Students in their first year of MS/MSc/MTech are eligible to apply.

Travel and accommodation

RRI will provide an equivalent of 3AC travel allowance from your institute/home to Bangalore on submission of the tickets. RRI will also arrange for local boarding and lodging in Bangalore for the entire duration of the school.

Format

  • The following introductory classes will be held during the first two weeks:
    • Introduction to astronomy and astrophysics
    • Radiative Processes
    • Special and general relativity
    • Astronomical instrumentation
    • Background cosmology
    • Galactic and extragalactic astronomy
    • Stellar physics and compact objects
    • Exoplanets, planetary dynamics
    • Planetary studies (solar system)
    • Sun
  • 7-8 weeks for projects to be offered primarily at RRI
  • Field trip to Gauribidanur Radio Observatory on the last day of the workshop
  • Visit to other facilities in Bangalore
  • End of school: Presentations by students at the end of their project

Application Process

  • Grade cards so far. For the students who have not completed their 2 years of Bachelors (4 semesters), they should submit their current grade cards for now and should submit their 2 year grade card when available
  • A one page (12 font) summary of why you are interested to join the school and what do you hope to achieve. Write at least one paragraph of the topics in astronomy and astrophysics that fascinates you the most.
  • Referee details. It can be one of the course instructors or supervisors of your previous projects. They will be contacted directly for the reference letters, if needed.
