About Competition
The Nikon Small World Competition started in 1975 to recognize the work of photographers using light microscopes. Over the years, it has become a top platform for photomicrographs from various scientific fields.
In 2011, Nikon introduced a new category called Small World in Motion as part of the 37th annual competition. This category includes movies and time-lapse photography taken with a microscope, adding a new dimension to the competition. Movies in this category are judged separately, with prizes for the top three.
Nikon accepts various subjects and any light microscopy technique, such as phase contrast, fluorescence, darkfield, and more. Entries are reviewed by an independent panel of experts in photomicrography and photography and judged based on creativity, information, technical skill, and visual appeal.
