About Google Hash Code

Hash Code, Google’s team-based programming competition, allows you to share your skills and connect with other coders as you work together to solve a problem modeled off a real Google engineering challenge! In small teams of two to four, coders all over the world will tackle the first problem through Qualification Round. Though this round is hosted online, teams can collaborate virtually to compete side-by-side in locally coordinated Hash Code Hubs. The top teams from this round are invited to join us for the virtual World Finals.

How it works

  • This is our online platform where you’ll form your team, join a Hub, practice, and compete during the rounds.
  • During the Qualification Round, you’ll watch our YouTube live stream to be introduced to the problem, and your team will have four hours to solve an optimization problem using the programming language and tools of your choice.
  • Teams can also compete alongside other teams in your area by joining a virtual Hub.
  • The top teams from the Qualification Round will be invited to the virtual World Finals, where they’ll work together to solve another challenge and compete for cash prizes.

Contest Structure

  • The HC Contest consists of two (2) rounds: the qualification round (the “Qualification Round”) and the final round (the “World Finals”). Google reserves the right to change the date, time, location, and structure of any round at its sole discretion.
  • Qualification Round
    • The Qualification Round will take place on Thursday, April 13, 2023, from 17:30 UTC until 21:30 UTC.
    • All participants will be notified of the Qualification Round results by Tuesday, April 18, 2023.
    • This date may be postponed by Google (at its sole discretion) by an information notice on the HC Contest website.
  • World Finals
    • The World Finals are scheduled to be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at a time to be determined and announced on the HC Contest website.
    • During the World Finals, your Team will be asked to solve a challenge using your own computer equipment and materials.
    • Teams will be notified about the structure of the World Finals at least 30 days before the competition.

Description of Ideal Candidate

Team Requirements

  • Participants must compete in a group of two (2), three (3), or four (4) members (each group referred to as a “Team”).
  • Participants must form their team in the competition platform and the team composition cannot be changed after the deadline specified on the HC Contest website.
  • A participant may leave a Team and withdraw from the HC Contest prior to such deadline. However, your Team must have at least two (2) members throughout the duration of the HC Contest (including the World Finals (as defined below)).
  • Any team with fewer than two (2) members is not eligible to participate in the HC Contest. Each participant can only participate on one (1) Team during the HC Contest. Both team names and participant nicknames will be displayed on the public scoreboard.

Age of Team Members

  • You understand and acknowledge the age requirements specified in the Terms.
  • In addition, you understand and acknowledge that only Team members who are at least eighteen (18) years old or the age of majority in their country of residence (whichever is greater) (“Age of Majority”) at the time of registration for the HC Contest are eligible to participate in the World Finals. In order for a Team to participate in the World Finals, at least two (2) Team members must meet the minimum age requirement.
