About the Event
Several major developments have taken place in India to centre stage the need for combating climate change-related adversities. Mountains cover about 27% of the Earth’s land surface and host about half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. They provide essential ecosystems, including water resources. However, mountain regions are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts, threatening both ecosystems and communities.
As climate change accelerates, there is an urgent need to raise awareness about these issues, especially among youth who will inherit these challenges. International Mountain Day, observed annually on December 11th, provides an ideal platform to focus attention on these critical matters.
Recognizing the importance of climate change and its impact in various aspects and as one of the activities under the Jean Monnet Chair (EUC-LAMP) Project SIU, the JM Chair is organizing a Social Media Campaign through a Making Competition on the Occasion of International Mountain Day on 11th December 2024.
Objective
- To create awareness about climate change impacts on mountain ecosystems and communities through a social media campaign.
- To foster cross-cultural dialogue and creative expression among college students from India and Europe to create an understanding of climate justice issues related to mountain ecosystems
- To strengthen international youth networks focused on spotlighting critical climate issues affecting mountain regions, fostering a global perspective on local challenges.
- To catalyze innovative thinking and collaborative action on climate change and mountain ecosystem conservation.
- To increase awareness and understanding of the management, legal, policy, and justice frameworks surrounding climate change impacts on mountain ecosystems and communities.
Event Description
The event is a social media campaign Organized on International Mountain Day (11th December 2024). It features poster-making competitions centered around six key themes:
- Mountain Ecosystems and Climate Change
- Climate Change and Sustainable Farming in Mountain Regions
- Climate Change and Commercial Mining: Impact on Mountains
- Biodiversity Loss in Mountain Habitats
- Mountain Communities: Facing the Brunt of Climate Change
- Law and Policy Frameworks and Climate Justice in Mountain Regions
The campaign unfolds as follows:
- Announcement of the Poster making Competition and campaign, including themes
- Release of competition guidelines
- Participants submit entries via Google Form
- Announcement of winners
- Virtual exhibition of top entries
Participants are encouraged to use creative mediums such as digital posters, infographics, etc. to address the themes. All entries must be shared on social media with the campaign #Savethemountains.
Eligibility
The competition is open to
- Indian and foreign students pursuing Undergraduate or post-graduation studies.
- Youth up to the age of 30 years.
Submission Guidelines
- Entries must be submitted online through the provided Google Form.
- Poster size: Half imperial (22 inches x 15 inches)
- Format: JPG or PNG, along with a short video clip (1-2 minutes) of you creating the poster
- Language: English only
- One entry per person
- Original entries only; plagiarism will lead to disqualification

The Winners shall be awarded with Prize Money.
