TOEFL Exam 2023 Eligibility

To be eligible to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), you must meet the following requirements:

1. Age Requirement: There is no age requirement to take the TOEFL, but test-takers under 16 must obtain permission from a parent or legal guardian.
2. Identification Requirement: You must have a valid, government-issued ID with your name, photograph, and signature.
3. English Proficiency Requirement: The TOEFL is designed for non-native speakers who seek to demonstrate their English proficiency. Therefore, you must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English at a high level to be eligible to take the test.

Types of TOEFL

• Each section is scored on a scale of 0 to 30; the total score ranges from 0 to 120.

TOEFL Essentials Test

• The TOEFL Essentials test measures four fundamental language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
• The user-friendly test format contains short but engaging tasks related to both academic and everyday life situations.
• You can take the test at home in about 1.5 hours, costing about half the cost of other major English tests.

Test Sections Overview

• Reading Section:
  • This section consists of three to five reading passages, each followed by questions.

Getting Your TOEFL iBT Scores

When you’ll get your scores? Scores will be available in your ETS account. How soon they’ll be available depends on how you took the test:

• Taken at a test centre: 4–8 days after your test date.
• TOEFL iBT Home Edition: 4–8 days after your test date.
• TOEFL iBT Paper Edition: 11–13 business days after your test date.

How you’ll get your scores?

• You will receive an email when your scores are available and you will be able to access your online account.
• Your scores are valid for 2 years, so you may need to download and print a PDF copy of your score report. 
• PDF transcripts are available for download 2 days after you receive scores electronically in your ETS account, or you can check this list of dates (PDF) for estimated availability dates for tests passed at the test centre.

TOEFL 2023 Scholarships

Purpose

This grant program supports the timely completion of doctoral research in foreign or second language assessment. PhD candidates around the world working on dissertation research in language assessment are encouraged to apply.

Award value

• Up to $6,000 (payable in U.S. dollars only)
• Up to 10 awards each year — one award per student

Eligibility

To be eligible you must be a PhD candidate who:

• is currently registered in a doctoral program.
• and has completed all coursework and candidacy requirements for the degree.
• has a committee-approved dissertation proposal related to a second or foreign language assessment.
• has not received another grant or award from ETS funding the proposed dissertation research

Note: 

• Due to the United States and European Union governmental sanctions, ETS may not be able to make payments to individuals or organizations in certain countries. 
• The specific countries are determined by the United States and European Union governmental agencies and are subject to change. 
• If your application is from one of these countries, you may be notified that your application cannot be considered for a TOEFL Grant or Award at this time.
