About IIT Kanpur Surge 2024

Students-Undergraduate Research Graduate Excellence (SURGE) program is an internship Program of IIT Kanpur, which runs under the aegis of Centre for Continuing Education (CCE), IIT Kanpur.

SURGE program was launched and inaugurated on 8 May 2006 by Professor Sanjay G. Dhande, the then Director, IIT Kanpur. Since inception, the SURGE program has grown, providing more and more research opportunities to young scholars than the year before.

Eligibility

Surge for SAARC Countries

The eligibility criteria for SAARC countries students at the time of starting of internship are mentioned below:

• B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed),
• Five year degree program (3rd year completed, 4th year completed)
• B.Sc/B.A. (2nd year completed)
• M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year completed)

For Non-IITK Indian Students

Under this program, Non-IITK Indian students with CPI >= 6 are eligible to apply for summer internship at IIT Kanpur. The eligibility criteria for Non-IITK students at the time of starting of internship are mentioned below:

• B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed),
• Five year degree program (3rd year completed, 4th year completed)
• B.Sc/B.A. (2nd year completed)
• M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year completed)

For IITK Students

Under this program, IITK students with CPI >= 5.5 are given an opportunity to work with a chosen mentor at IITK. In order to complete the application, it is necessary for the student to identify an IITK Faculty who is willing to be his/her mentor during the summer internship, and a suitable project to pursue for the 08 weeks in summer.

The eligibility criteria for IITK students at the time of starting of internship are:

• B.Tech/BS (2nd,3rd year completed),
• Dual Degree (2nd, 3rd, 4th year),
• M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year)

Funding

The following financial supports are provided to the eligible SURGE participants;

• Funding from SURGE (Institute Funded Category): Students selected under this category may receive a stipend of Rs 12,500/- (administrative charges reimbursed) during the program duration. Candidates with CPI>=8.5 (at the time of registration) will be eligible for consideration of Institute Funding.
• Funding from IITK Project (Project Funded Category): Students selected under this category may receive funding directly from the faculty members (mentors) of IIT Kanpur.
• Self Funded: Students selected under this category will have an opportunity to work on projects of faculty members of IIT Kanpur, however, they will not be entittled for any funding.
• Funding for SAARC participants: The students selected under this category are eligible for scholarship of Rs. 12,500/-. Administrative charges and travel expenses (upto Rs. 10,000/- (maximum) or as per actual) are also reimbursed.
• Industry-IITK tie-up, if any: Students selected under this category will have an opportunity to work as individuals or in teams, on real-world projects proposed by the industry with mentors from both IIT Kanpur and the industry. The stipend will be paid by the industry. In SURGE-2023, only IIT Kanpur students can participate under this category.
