About IIST
Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), situated at Thiruvananthapuram, is Deemed a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. IIST is an autonomous body under the Department of Space, Government of India. The idea of such an institute was mooted, considering the need for high-quality manpower for the Indian Space Research Organization, one of the world’s leading scientific organizations engaged in space research and space applications. The institute is the first of its kind in the country to offer high-quality education at the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral levels in areas with a special focus on space sciences, space technology and space applications.
IIST was formally inaugurated on 14 September 2007 by Dr G. Madhavan Nair, the then Chairman, ISRO and was temporarily housed in the premises of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, very close to where ISRO built and launched its first rocket.
Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology is a premier institution under the Department of Space, Government of India, focusing on Space Science and Technology and related areas. IIST has around 96 faculty, 578 BTech students, 258 MTech students, and 313 PhD scholars.
About IIST Summer Internship Programme
Every summer, many talented interns come to IIST to work with faculty on interesting short-term projects. Students at various stages in BTech, BS-MS, MSc, and other programmes from reputed institutions like IITs and IISERs come to IIST for summer internships.
- The summer internship of 2024 does not have fellowships. However, boarding and lodging will be provided at nominal rates of Rs 125 (for a base meal) and Rs 25, respectively, per day, depending on the availability of the hostel rooms.
- Interns must pay a nominal amount of Rs 100 towards certain administrative charges when they join for an internship.
- Each intern will be given a temporary identity card to access various facilities in IIST.
- Interns will be provided certificates for completed internships.

Qualifications
- Current Programme details include Programme Name, Specialization, current semester or year of study, name and location of the current institution, the web address of the current institution, university, cumulative percentage or CGPA. If you specify the CGPA, please specify the maximum CGPA out of which you secured the current CGPA in the format Cumulative CGPA Secured/Maximum Cumulative CGPA.
- The previous programme details start from 10th to 12th and include details of any other degree programme completed before the current programme. Specify specialization, year of passing, board/university, percentage of marks, or CGPA.
- Specify details on any short-term programmes or workshops you have attended relevant to the topics/projects you are applying for (include location, organizer, when completed, duration, what was learned, etc.).
- Specify details on any special scholarship or fellowship, like KVPY, that you have been awarded (include year, etc.)
