Applications are invited for the Summer Training Program at IGCAR Atomic Energy Department. Apply by April 24.

About IGCAR

Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research [IGCAR], the second largest establishment of the Department of Atomic Energy next to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, was set up at Kalpakkam, 80 KMs south of Chennai [MADRAS], in 1971 with the main objective of conducting broad based multidisciplinary programme of scientific research and advanced Engineering, directed towards the development of sodium cooled Fast Breeder Reactor [FBR] technology, in India.

This is part of the second stage of Indian Atomic Energy Programme, which is aimed at preparing the country for utilization of the extensive Thorium reserves and providing means to meet the large demands of electrical energy in 21st century. In meeting the objectives, a modest beginning was made by constructing a sodium cooled Fast Breeder Test Reactor [FBTR], with a nominal power of 40 MWt, based on the French Reactor, RAPSODIE.

About the Program

Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research is conducting a six-week Summer Training Programme in
Physics (STIP-25) and Chemistry (STIC-25) for students entering their final year of regular or integrated
MSc (Physics/Chemistry). (Students completing MSc in 2025 should not apply).

This six-week long programme will comprise both classroom lectures and hands-on laboratory experience
through projects. This programme is aimed at motivating students to pursue a career in research. The
theme for this year’s course is “Quantum mechanics and emerging technologies”.

Eligibility

A consistently good academic track record with a First Class in BSc and First Semester of MSc
and with a strong desire to take up a research career.

Location

Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu.

Benefits

About thirty five students will be selected in each discipline (Physics and Chemistry). The selected students will be provided with

  • Local hospitality.
  • Travel expenses by sleeper class train/bus(non-AC).
