About the Fellowship
In a significant boost to advanced research and innovation, 225 Post-Doctoral Fellowships (PDFs) are being provisioned across India, with 25 new seats supported each year for a one-year period. These fellowships aim to nurture specialized research in emerging domains by supporting young researchers who have demonstrated academic excellence and research potential.

Objective of the Fellowship
This initiative is designed to:
- Promote specialized research in emerging technologies and fields.
- Support academically outstanding candidates with a proven track record in research.
- Foster industry-linked, outcome-oriented projects.
Eligibility Criteria
The fellowship is open only to Indian citizens who fulfill the following conditions:
- Must have a Ph.D. degree from a recognized university with a first-class academic record at all previous levels.
- Should have completed Ph.D. within the last 5 years.
- Age should be below 40 years at the time of application.
- The institution, not the individual, must submit the proposal for fellowship seats.
- The fellow must not be receiving any other fellowship during this period.
- The candidate must not have completed Ph.D. from the same institution where the fellowship is sought.
- A mentor/guide with a Ph.D. in Science/Engineering and holding a regular academic/research position at a recognized Indian institution is mandatory.
- Preference is given to applicants with industry linkages or proposals aligned with industry challenges.
- Fellows currently employed in regular positions are not eligible, though those in temporary research roles may apply (subject to resignation if selected).
Nature and Duration of Support
- The fellowship is tenable only in India.
- It is a temporary, full-time assignment of one year, extendable based on performance.
- The monthly fellowship amount is ₹1.08 lakh.
- A contingency grant of ₹1.00 lakh per annum is also provided for minor equipment and research-related expenses.
- Host institutions must extend infrastructure and administrative support.
- No additional manpower or personnel will be supported under the scheme.
- The research must be conducted at the same institution that receives the seat allocation.
Mode of Application
- Calls for proposals will be announced via the official portal through this link.
- Eligible institutions must apply on behalf of the PDF candidates.
- Institutions may use their own application format but must comply with the MeitY guidelines.
- Selection is competitive, and meeting minimum criteria does not guarantee selection.
Discontinuation Rules
The fellowship may be discontinued under the following circumstances:
- If the fellow undertakes any other job or fellowship.
- In case of non-compliance with guidelines or inadequate progress.
- If funds are misused or the terms of the award are violated.
- Fellows or institutions wishing to withdraw must give at least one month’s notice.
All such decisions are subject to review and approval by the PhD Cell, DIC; MeitY, which reserves the right to alter terms as necessary.
